Abstract This lecture is part of a series that attempts to give an overview over important issues and key concepts in American literary and cultural history from early colonial times to the present. This part covers roughly the second half of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The topics will touch upon the political thoughts, ideas and experience of the Civil War, the reform movements of the Gilded Age, controversies over modernization (industrialization, urbanization, immigration) - as well as important literary issues such as realism, naturalism and modernism.
